IN HISTORY MANY TIMES MAJOR COIN DESIGN CHANGES OCCURRED AT KEY TIMES OF NATIONAL TRANSITION.
In 1859, just before the Civil War, began a new penny emerged (the Indian head cent). Just three years prior to this, a major change had occurred as the size of the cent was reduced drastically. Large cents were changed to small cents of the Flying Eagle design. They were still worth a penny but their appearance was much smaller.
During the Civil War the two-cent piece first appeared and was the first US coin to bear the inscription "In God We Trust". (One thing about our county, despite our many faults we seem to know where to turn when things get rough.)
In the years of 1891-92 there was a major coinage change. The Seated Liberty design on dimes, quarters and halves was replaced by the Liberty Head design (seven plus years after the nickel changed).
In 1893 two special commemorative coins were minted for the Columbian Exposition of the 1893-Chicago World's Fair. They were authorized by the US and were in denominations of twenty-five cents and fifty cents. Which sold at a premium of $1.00 each to benefit the fair. It was at this fair that the First Parliament of World Religions was convened, when representatives from nearly every known religious group in the world gathered. They exchanged ideas and sowed their doctrine on American soil; hence the seeds of the counterfeits were planted. Today there are many who claim to speak for God. Some are genuine and some are counterfeit. It still takes a "metal specialist" to tell the difference.
The Lord of Heaven was not without his witness as out side the gates of the fairgrounds a lone Christian minister set up his church. The man was John Alexander Dowie, the man who later founded the city of Zion, Illinois.

In 1913 a new nickel design, one year before World War I began and in 1916 again the dime, quarter and half dollar had a major overhaul.

In 1930-32 the quarter went through a major design change. This was the beginning years of The Great Depression.
In 1938 the nickel changed from a representative of the first nation's people to the bust of Thomas Jefferson. This was a year before World War II began.
In 1945-46 there was a major dime design change. This was just after the dropping of The Atomic bomb and the end of World War II.
In 1947-48 a major design change occurred in the half dollar denomination. This was a pivotal year of shift as the nation of Israel was born in a day - May 14, 1948. It also marked a major spiritual shift for the Christian Church world wide. Billy Graham became a household name in 1949 with his first large scale evangelistic campaign in Los Angeles, along with many other men of God who were also thrust into national prominence around this time frame. Men like Oral Roberts and women like Kathryn Kuhlman also came on the scene teaching that God still heals today.
